The Price of Oil (2019) is featured on the themed Playlist of Center for Screen Culture based on Sensing the Archive – a Frames Cinema Journal Special (March 2022) that accompanies the newly published Frames Cinema Journal Issue 19 to give a short primer on the issues, methods and implications of the sensory properties of archives, archival instabilities and the digital turn. Archives have always had their absences and lacunae, but digital materiality – or immateriality – produces new instabilities that require novel ways of approaching audio-visual heritage. The list includes selections from the editors, as well as Guest Editor, Catherine Russell, and recommendations from contributors, many tying into their articles from Issue 19.

Media Archaeology + Feminism is a mini-series of themed talks and workshops for fall 2021 through spring 2022, curated and organized by Maryam Muliaee and sponsored by the Department of Critical Media Practices, the Media Archaeology Lab (MAL), and the Intermedia Arts, Writing and Performance Program (IAWP) at University of Colorado Boulder.

The International Symposium of Cinema and Film Analysis is organized by the CNPq research group CineArte – Cinema, Film Analysis, and Intellectual Experience, in São Paulo, Brazil. The event is held online from 17-19 November 2021, with a goal is to deepen and broaden the exchange between research works centered on film analysis, gathering different perspectives, theoretical approaches, and methodologies that demonstrate how film language can be intertwined with numerous fields of study. The Symposium is a result of the interdisciplinary exchange between researchers who investigate the relationship between cinema, audiovisual, by selecting film analysis as a methodology within different usages and contexts. Structured as a subject between 1960 and 1970, film analysis divides and reconstitutes meanings within audiovisual products. Between the twentieth and the twenty-first century, we can identify different branches of it: François Jost and André Gaudreault’s narratology, David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson’s narrative and style analyses, Jacques Aumont’s immanent perspective, Laura Mulvey’s feminist film theory that investigated the male gaze through the psychoanalysis and also her counter cinema proposal, Eisenstein’s montage, the interchange between art history and style, formal aesthetics, social and historical perspectives, allegories, among others.

Maryam Muliaee, invited as part of DCMP Visiting Artists
Moving (Recycled) Images: Feminist Media Archaeology in Artistic Practice
In a lecture titled Moving (Recycled) Images, media artist-scholar Maryam Muliaee will talk about her recent works with moving images in the context of both Media Archaeology and Feminism. Media technologies are agents whose power and singularities, as consumer black boxes, remain concealed from our perception and attention. But art is capable of materializing the agency of media and rendering anarchival materialities for our experience. Maryam’s art practice is motivated by the curiosity to reveal (some)thing hidden in technologies of every day. She deploys digital tools and everyday technologies such as copier/printer in non-standard ways to create a variantology of moving images, challenge the norms of authenticity and media specificity, and to ‘play’ with the materiality of audio-visual archives. In this presentation, she will talk about a series of works collectively titled Recycled Series (2016-2020). Maryam thinks about Feminist Media Archaeology as a promising framework that fuels both her practice and research in media art and study. In working with media objects and images, she adopts techniques of media archaeology and its creative methodologies of remediation, while staying informed by feminist interests in variation, mobility, and haptic modes of viewings.

Fight For Good’s premiere at the Burchfield Penney Art Center at SUNY Buffalo State College, on Thursday, April 22, 2021, at 7:00 PM.
The Premiere will be followed by a discussion Panel live-streamed on Burchfield Penney’s Facebook page. This was the first event in over a year in Burchfield since Covid. The event began with a greeting video message received from the NYS Assemblywoman, Crystal D. Peoples-Stokes; the Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino was also in attendance.
The film will be on air: WBBZ TV Channel 67.1 on Sunday, Apr 25, 10:30am & 7:30pm, and May 27, 12:30pm.

WORK (2020): Official Selection in Buffalo International Film Festival 2020
WORK is an experimental documentary film (directed by Mani Mehrvarz, animation by Maryam Muliaee) that documents Wooden Cities in recording their newest album with the same title. WORK has been officially selected for the competition and screening at the 18th Buffalo International Film Festival 2020. This year, BIFF is being presented in a socially distanced, cinematically connected, virtual-first format, showcasing more than 100 films, shorts, and episodic series from 20 countries, with over 100 film delegates from across the globe participating. Originally planned as part of the Arts Collaboratory 2020 spring season of interdisciplinary programming, Embodied Landscape has been reframed by Maryam Muliaee and Naila Ansari as a virtual experience and now as an online exhibition. A collaborative multimedia production, the project is a reflection on one of Buffalo’s iconic architecture which has been lost.

The Price of Oil (2019): announced as the winner of the 4th Annual International Experimental Film Festival “The Unforeseen” in Belgrade, Serbia. Thanks to CZKD team and the jury members: Manja Ristić, Ivana Rajić, and Luka Beslagic.
Jury’s Comment: “With an extremely important and present political message, the film, through the dramatization archaeology of media, shows us the deep roots of neoliberal exploitation. The composition of the film equally emphasizes the poetical-typographic, musical, graphic-animation treatment of the structure, in comprehensively successful experimentation with form.”

The Price of Oil (2019): Official Selection in the 4th International Experimental Film Festival in Belgrade: “The Unforeseen”
The Price of Oil (2019) has been officially selected in Belgrade’s 4th International Experimental Film Festival “The Unforeseen”. The festival takes place at CZKD (The Center for Cultural Decontamination) in Belgrade, Serbia. After the screening, film scholar and critic Luka Bešlagić (FMK) gives a lecture (Nov 23rd, 2019) on what is experimental in film today, and what can be considered an experiment followed by the second half of the competition program.

Domestic Thresholds, an exhibition by Heather Hart, Edra Soto, and Rodney Taylor. The exhibition features projects that explore how people build connections to others both inside and outside the walls of those structures we call home. During the opening, dancer Naila Ansari, media artists Mani Mehrvarz and Maryam Muliaee, and musician Curtis Lovell will present a collaborative, multimedia art project that will use new media, performance, and live dance to transform the static physical space of the exhibition into a dynamic interactive environment. The audience is invited to experience the work by watching the filmed performance on their mobile phones in the exhibition space.

UNEXPOSED is an exhibition of 40 young Iranian female artists whose works selected among 400 candidates. These creations were never exposed before, and this also justifies the title of the exhibition: UNEXPOSED. The exhibition gives to these young women artists the opportunity to demonstrate their work in Brussels, Athens, Warsaw and Tehran. The exhibition is curated by art historian Fery Malek–Madani and organized by Art Cantara. The opening was prefaced by the Minister of the French Community of Belgium at Brussels, and the exhibition was followed by two major conferences:
28 Nov 2012 – “L’Art Moderne en Iran, de son émergence à aujourd’hui”
15 Dec 2012 – “Les opportunités ou les défis d’être femme et artiste dans l’Iran d’aujourd’hui”
