An Urban Sound Salad

An Urban Sound Salad is a web-based sound journal and interactive sound map documenting the sonic environment of Buffalo, New York. The project combines field recordings, photographs, maps, and written observations collected during walks through the city. Recordings are organized geographically and accompanied by notes describing the locations, recording conditions, listening experiences, and the acoustic characteristics of different urban sites. The project includes a searchable online archive, an interactive map, and a mobile interface that allows users to browse and listen to recordings associated with specific locations.

The sound archive focuses on everyday urban environments, including streets, neighborhoods, parks, construction sites, vacant lots, buildings, and discarded materials, creating a growing collection of Buffalo's changing acoustic landscape.
